Is Decentralization Better than Democratization?
The comparative value of the technological principles of Web 3 / Web 2 and what we really need to heal our world.
Democratization of technology presumed democratizing it would be good, but people like Andrew Keen realized this was folly. Meanwhile idealists such as myself saw opportunity for change - same coin, both sides.
Turns out democracy was too fragile to remain uncorrupted in face of the strength of entrenched powers. What we really needed was a decentralization of technology... but even this falls way short of it's greatest potential future. The learning curve will need to be compressed, the UX refined/streamlined, the costs of participation lowered, the scalability and interoperability of the infrastructure need exponential improvement, and we need to once again teach everyone to be the CEO of their own lives/families/communities... while learning to get along with people with whom we disagree on the most fundamental of values.
From the technology perspective, tt will indeed be something beyond liquid democracy, built as public infrastructure using the design patterns of blockchain and what is now being called Web 3. It will be a new, more inclusive class of citizens bonding together with integrity and mutuality - those who know that if you are better off, they are better off.
This is just a part of what I want to discuss together. This is what I seek to design, together. This is the gift I want us to share with the world, to convene the people who can actually make it a reality, for the benefit of all of us. It’s not technology for technology’s sake, it’s for the people. So once again in the throes of an emergent Web 3.0, we need to remember, the point is STILL people.
It starts with our #Web31Unconference, and the conversations that will lead up to it. There's a small, but incredible group of people with several decades and only a few years of experience, pioneers from every recent era.
The work starts, and tickets will be available at a special discount at the kickoff event next week on January 3. The larger Unconference will be held online on March 1 as the conversation expands and our focus increases through conversations leading up to it.
From there what happens, will be up to us and those who participate in the web31.dao
